A spinal osteotomy is a surgical procedure used to correct deformities in the spine. Here, bone is removed from the back of the vertebral arch to correct long, gradual curves of kyphosis like those produced by Scheuermann's kyphosis or ankylosing spondylitis. The majority of procedures that treat spinal deformities are types of osteotomy.

In stiff and ankylosed cervical spines, osteotomies are required to restore sagittal and coronal balance … Rigid cervical deformities are difficult problems to treat. The goals of surgical treatment include deformity correction, achieving a rigid fusion, and performing a thorough neural decompression. Abstract. Introduction Treatment of spine imbalance by posterior osteotomy is a valuable technique. Several surgical tech- niques have been developed and

An osteotomy has been given a range of terms. Basically, it can be divided mainly into the following three types ( Fig. 1 ): Posterior hemivertebra resection, in case of bar formation with osteotomy of the bar, allows for excellent correction in both the frontal and sagittal planes, with a short segment of fusion. Early surgery in young children prevents the development of severe local deformities and secondary structural curves, thus allowing for normal growth in the unaffected parts of the spine.

Every spine osteotomy surgery needs to investigate the fusion and longstanding results. SPO osteotomy is primarily designed for kyphosis deformity of AS, especially as patient has a bony fusion ability. So in most of circumstances, anterior gap of SPO can be a satisfied spine fusion results.

A spinal osteotomy is a surgical procedure used to correct certain deformities of the adult or pediatric spine. Most procedures that treat spinal deformity are technically types of osteotomy. These include the posterior column osteotomy (PCO), the pedicle subtraction osteotomy (PSO) and vertebral column resection (VCR). Spine surgeons should acquire sufficient knowledge and surgical experience on the various types of osteotomy technique before surgery. An osteotomy has been given a range of terms. Spine Osteotomy. Spine osteotomy is a surgical procedure in which a section of the spinal bone is cut and removed to allow for correction of spinal alignment. Spine osteotomy is usually needed for correction of severe deformed, rigid and fixed spinal deformity when nonsurgical treatments do not relieve symptoms such as numbness, weakness, or pain In more simple terms, spine osteotomies, both Ponte type, and Smith Peterson are surgical procedures in which a certain section of the spinal bone is cut and then removed to allow for the correction of the alignment of the spine. Spine osteotomy is reserved for the correction of severely deformed, rigid and fixed spinal irregularities, where non-surgical processes don’t work.

Most procedures that treat spinal deformity are technically types of osteotomy. These include the posterior column osteotomy (PCO), the pedicle subtraction osteotomy (PSO) and vertebral column resection (VCR).

Osteotomies may be life saving procedures for patients with rigid severe spinal deformity. Several different types of osteotomies have been defined by several authors. To correct and provide a balanced spine with reasonable amount of correction is the ultimate goal in deformity correction by osteotomies. Selection of osteotomy is decided by careful preoperative assessment of the patient and deformity and the amount of correction needed to have a balanced spine.
